How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper and Scientific Ethics - A review

ABC/J Scientific Writing Course

The ABC/J Scientific Writing Course took place from 24-26 April 2018 at the Institute of Geophysics and Meteorology of the University of Cologne.
Geoverbund ABC/J offered the course to promote young researchers from the ABC/J-network, who profited from the free access to Geoverbund study programs. 36 participants from the four locations of the Aachen-Bonn-Cologne/Jülich research area and two participants of the partner network SAGES, the Scottish Alliance for Geoscience, Environment & Society, took part in the program.

During the three-day event, lecturer Professor Markus Flury illustrated what it takes to create a good scientific publication. The Professor for Soil Physics and Vadose Zone Hydrology at Washington State University has extensive experience in the scientific publication process. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles as well as 10 book chapters and served as editor for the Journal of Environ-mental Quality and Water Resources Research and the Vadose Zone Journal.

After introducing the procedures how to publish a scientific paper, Professor Markus Flury addressed the concepts of scientific writing. The participants benefited from the many illustrative examples and the opportunity to discuss their own writing with the expert. The different aspects of authorship and scientific ethics as part of the publication process were also lively discussed.
‘I am impressed by the many active contributions and the commitment of the course participants’, says Flury. After three instructive course days, the feedback from the participants was also very positive, as a participant says, ‘The course has motivated me to write and, what I find particularly helpful, has also reduced the fear of this elaborate process. Now I hope very much that I will soon have the opportunity to publish my results and put the tips into practice’.
