Post-Doc in remote sensing

28.06.2018 - Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Agrosphere (IBG-3), Forschungszentrum Jülich

The Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Agrosphere (IBG-3) at the Forschungszentrum Jülich is offering a postdoctoral position in remote sensing. The Horizon 2020 project GEOEssential is addressing the need for trusted sources of data and information to monitor the progresses made on environmental conditions towards policy targets. Remote sensing and in situ data from GEOSS and Copernicus platforms need to be utilized to generate added value for advanced monitoring, evaluation and prediction of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Agrosphere (IBG-3) conducts research to improve our understanding of biogeochemical and hydrological processes in terrestrial systems. Specific studies focus on environmental controls on biogeochemical cycling of elements, the analysis of exchange processes and nutrient dynamics in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. A combination of experiments, modelling and innovative observation technologies is used to bridge the gap between model, process and management scale. Its research contributes to the sustainable and resource-conserving use of soils and water and to the quantification of the effect of climate and land use change on terrestrial ecosystems. We offer a competent and interdisciplinary working environment, as well as an excellent framework in the areas of experiments and modelling.

Your Job:

  • Workflow development: Develop approaches to link Earth Observation data to SDG indicators via essential variables
  • Workflow implementation: Establish process chains in a virtual laboratory on Amazon Web Services to gather baseline data to document initial conditions, develop reliable metrics as indicators, monitor essential variables, and to account for dynamic natural and human processes
  • Data fusion: Analyze, define and apply new approaches for multi-temporal multi-scale fusion of Earth Observation data
  • Validation: The aim is to relate spaceborne observations to in situ measurements, to analyze existing in-situ observation standards for validation and identify adequate networks, to define strategies for the validation of specific essential variables, and to define protocols for validation good practice
  • Topics are preferably selected from hydrology (soil moisture, drought, groundwater recharge, evapotranspiration), but the successful candidate is encouraged to realize new aspects driven by his/her previous activities
  • present results at international conferences

Your Profile:

  • University degree in either remote sensing, geosciences, computer science, physics, civil engineering or applied mathematics and a PhD degree in a related field
  • Experience in remote sensing and geoscientific simulation
  • Knowledge in the areas of hydrology, numerical methods and knowledge of data fusion methods is a clear advantage
  • Demonstrated programming skills with Python and/or Matlab/Octave
  • Experience in cloud computing by including recent repositories/technologies (GitHub, Docker, etc. ) is an advantage
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in an international and interdisciplinary team across institutes
  • Very good communication and organizational skills
  • Good publication record
  • Very good command of the English language

Our Offer:

  • Attendance at national and international conferences and workshops
  • Possibility for further scientific and technical training through international experts
  • A comprehensive further training programme, including English language courses
  • Employment for a fixed term of two years with the possibility of an extension
  • Full-time position with the option of slightly reduced working hours
  • Salary and social benefits in conformity with the provisions of the Collective Agreement for the Civil Service (TVöD). Depending on the applicant's qualifications and the precise nature of the tasks, salary grade 13 TVöD-Bund
  • Publication: simultaneous internal and external publication
