Assistant Professor in Soil Microbiology

The Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of California, Riverside invites applications for a tenure-track position in Soil Microbiology at the rank of Assistant Professor.

The position has 75% Instruction and Research and 25% Organized Research in the Agricultural Experiment Station ( The successful candidate will develop a nationally recognized research program in Soil Microbiology encompassing but not limited to one or more of the following areas: cycling of macro and trace elements in agroecosystems and other managed or natural systems; microbe-plant interactions; basic and applied research in microbial transformations of legacy and emerging contaminants; microbial processes in greenhouse gas production and responses to climate change; development of antimicrobial resistance; and microbial ecology. The applicant should have training or knowledge in genomics, proteomics, next-generation sequencing, bioinformatics or other advanced approaches. The incumbent will be highly encouraged to collaborate with current faculty in related fields including soil and water sciences, environmental chemistry and toxicology, plant pathology, environmental microbiology, and atmospheric sciences. The successful candidate is expected to fully engage in the teaching mission of the department and university, including formal classroom instruction in the Environmental Sciences undergraduate and graduate programs (including mentoring of both M.S. and Ph.D. students). Teaching responsibilities will include an undergraduate class in soil or environmental microbiology; rotation in teaching a large introductory Environmental Science class; and graduate instruction in the candidate’s area of specialty.

A Ph.D. in Soil/Environmental Microbiology, Environmental Science, Soil Science, Microbial Ecology, Environmental Chemistry, Environmental Toxicology, or related field, and a proven ability to conduct innovative research are required. Preferred qualifications include demonstrated experience in using genomics, sequencing, other molecular techniques, or bioinformatics in basic and applied research; strong background in soil, agroecosystems, and soil-plant nutrition relationships; and a record of high-quality scientific publications and excellent communication skills.
