Newsletter Geoverbund ABC/J

No 01/2020 | 17 Feb 2020

Dear members of Geoverbund,
dear readers,

at the beginning of the new year, the Geoverbund launched two new funding lines. ABC/J Competence Centres combine complementary expertise on a subject-specific topic, coordinate research activities and network research infrastructures - across locations and detached from institutional structures. In addition, the centres are to play an important role in the training and further education of our young academics. Under the umbrella of the International Exchange Programme Scotland/Germany, scientists of the Geoverbund ABC/J can apply for a financial contribution towards travel, accommodation and research costs, which serves to establish new or intensify already started research cooperations with our Scottish partner network SAGES. You can read more about both funding lines in this issue.

On my own behalf: Dear ABC/J members and colleagues, after more than five years of working for the Geoverbund in the ABC/J research region, I will be taking on a new task from April onwards and will return to my alma mater in Trier for this purpose. I would therefore like to thank all of you for the cooperation in the most diverse projects and the good time! It will remain in my best memory.

Enjoy your reading!
Dr. Daniel Felten │ Head Geoverbund ABC/J Coordination Office

International exchange scheme Scotland/Germany launched

January 31, 2020 was an incisive day for Europe as the UK has left the EU. Professor Mark Inall, Director of SAGES: "Launching this scheme now underlines a commitment to grow our longstanding and highly valued international relationships between leading research groups in Scotland and Germany."

On a competitive basis, the two parallel schemes will provide flexible financial support to initiate and enhance collaboration in all aspects of geoscience and Earth systems science. "We are delighted that our geoscience networks Geoverbund ABC/J (located in Germany) and SAGES (located in Scotland) have found an uncomplicated way to continue to further strengthen their research cooperation", says Geoverbund's Scientific Director Prof. Harry Vereecken.

The Geoverbund ABC/J promotes the establishment of competence centres along the lines of the two already established centres HPSC TerrSys and CPEX-LAB. ABC/J Competence Centres bundle complementary expertises on a specific research topic, coordinate research activities and interconnect scientific infrastructures - across locations and independent of institutional structures.

Community Land Model - ABC/J Expert Talk 2020

© Dr. Bibi Naz/Forschungszentrum Jülich

Geoverbund ABC/J invites to register for the 2020 ABC/J Expert Talk on the topic 'CLM - Current trends, future needs and opportunities in land surface modelling'. The 2-day event was planned for the End of May but had to be postponed. A new date cannot be specified yet. The 2020 Expert Talk aims to bring together diverse stakeholders involved in land surface modelling. The event is designed as a dialogue platform to discuss ongoing developments, e.g. current trends, weaknesses of current land surface models, and future needs. Moreover, the Expert Talk will also serve to explore the possibilities and supporters for the development of a 'CLM 5.0' with the involvement of further working groups from Germany and Europe.

At the beginning of March 2020, 20 students from Aachen, Bonn and Cologne will again be called: Off to the desert! In the 9th calendar week, our blog "Off to the Desert" will be launched on the Jülich blog portal. For around three weeks, we will report directly from the south-eastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula on the experiences of our students.

The Rhenish carnival has always surprised many newcomers to Jülich. For the colleagues from Jülich Corporate Communications, this was reason enough to gather all the important information for the "jecke" days and to explain the customs to colleagues from more distant countries.
