Dear members of Geoverbund,
dear readers,
to start the winter semester 2019/20, a warm welcome to all freshmen and new colleagues in the ABC/J region!
Since 2012, all students in the geographical and geoscientific study programmes at RWTH Aachen University, Bonn University and Cologne University have been able to attend courses at the other locations and have their achievements credited. The universities do not charge an additional study fee! The basis for this is a corresponding agreement between the universities in the Geoverbund, which is currently being updated and will in future include two further study courses (MSc Ecotoxicology and MSc Engineering Geohazards). In my opinion, this is a great contribution of the faculties and institutes to the promotion of individual educational pathways of the students!
Enjoy your reading!

Geological evidence for the decline of a medieval city
|
In their article published in Open Quaternary, Ermertz et al. show how geological field data can contribute to solve archaeological problems. The authors conclude that the ancient city of Qalhat (Oman) was most likely destroyed by an earthquake about 500 years ago.

Loess and Archaeology - International Workshop, 28-29 November 2019
|
Numerous archaeological sites are embedded in Eurasian loess sequences, which is why interdisciplinary research approaches can develop synergies. During the two-day workshop, the latest scientific results from the fields of archaeology, geoarchaeology, palaeogeography and palaeoclimatology will be exchanged and discussed. The workshop is organised within the framework of CRC 806 "Our Way to Europe" (www.sfb806.uni-koeln.de).
