The Science Bridge Concept

PASCAL │ November 26-30, 2018 │ WASCAL Headquarters, Accra, Ghana

PASCAL aims to initiate a knowledge and technology transfer bridge (Science Bridge) between Germany and Africa in the areas of soil science, nutrition and hydrology. At the following, the underlying Science Bridge concept of Forschungszentrum Jülich is explained in detail.

Based on a common scientific interest, a science bridge provides two-way connections between individual researchers or groups thereof, scientific organizations or even countries and geographical regions. The objective is to bring together people, to build networks via various activities and start scientific collaborations. The bridge offers schools and workshops to students and promotes the brightest through specific fellowship programs. It links diverse cultures, thereby fostering a mutual understanding and appreciation. The goals of expanding the collaboration are:

  • more direct communication based on a common understanding at project level
  • reduction of language barriers
  • matching the expectations of the partners or persons involved
  • precise knowledge of the technical equipment of the partner organizations
  • an even more targeted training or selection of students in advance
  • use of synergies within the thematically differently oriented labs
  • increasing the co-publications and thus the scientific presence.

The three pillars of success:

  1. Joint Research
    - Use existing infrastructures and invite people to join scientific projects
    - Plan and build new research infrastructures and use it for common research
  2. Educational Training
    - Identify talented young scientists and students and help them to find their way by different educational training programs
    - Implement tailored fellowship programs
  3. Knowledge Transfer
    - Implement Cotutelle de these programmes for doctoral theses at a home university in one country and a partner university abroad
    - Establish joint labs to return well-educated excellent young scientists in the fields of cooperation, build up a hub on different thematic areas
