How to Write and Publish a Scientific Paper and Scientific Ethics
To publish a scientic paper, one needs both good science and good writing. This course will introduce the concepts of scientific writing and the procedures to publish a scientific paper. Participants can also bring their own writing, and good and bad writing will be discussed. The course does not focus on English per se, but rather emphasizes the scientific writing aspect. The course will also discuss authorship and ethical issues involved in the publication process.

Nitrate and (Ground-) Water – One Problem, Many Strategies
Roughly one year ago, the European Commission referred Germany to the European Court of Justice for allegedly neglecting to take stronger groundwater protection measures. To this day, the limit value of 50 mg/l nitrate is exceeded at about 18 % of Germany’s measuring points. The agricultural sector is viewed as the main culprit. In particular, the spreading of animal and mineral fertilizers but increasingly also the digestates of energetically exploited biomass lead to widespread overfertilization of agricultural areas and therefore excessive nitrate contents in the groundwater.

Erfolg für Bonner Geodäten: DFG fördert Forschergruppe
Die Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) fördert die Forschergruppe „Understanding the Global Freshwater System by Combining Geodetic and Remote Sensing Information with Modelling Using Calibration/Data Assimilation Approach“ (GlobalCDA), die von der Frankfurter Hydrologin Prof. Petra Döll und dem Bonner Geodäten Prof. Jürgen Kusche koordiniert wird. Die Forscher erhalten für die ersten drei Jahre insgesamt rund 2,9 Millionen Euro. Am Projekt sind sieben Gruppen aus der Bundesrepublik sowie jeweils eine Gruppe aus der Schweiz und aus Luxemburg beteiligt.

Geoverbund ABC/J Succeeds in Ideas Competition on International Research Marketing
For the third time, the German Research Foundation (DFG) has honoured marketing concepts for international research as part of an ideas competition. Forschungszentrum Jülich applied for and won one of the top awards, endowed with € 100,000. The award-winning concept concerns the pan-African challenge of soil as a resource and was developed in collaboration with the International Soil Modeling Consortium (ISMC), Geoverbund ABC/J, and the Centre of Excellence High-Performance Scientific Computing in Terrestrial Systems (HPSC TerrSys), all of which are located at Forschungszentrum Jülich.
