The two geoscience networks Geoverbund ABC/J and SAGES (based in Scotland), which have been working together successfully since 2016, have now once again found an uncomplicated way to further strengthen their research cooperation and offer their scientists attractive funding through a new exchange programme.

The focus of the joint cooperation is on the development of bilateral research projects in the fields of carbon, water and HPC, postgraduate training and exchange programmes for scientists. Due to the BREXIT and the Corona pandemic, some activities were temporarily suspended. In the short term, however, there is now the opportunity to apply for the SAGES programme SERENE - Saltire Emerging Researcher Scheme (Directed Stream), which is financially supported by Geoverbund ABC/J as a partner institution.

The main objective of SERENE is to provide flexible funding for Scottish-based geoscientists (applicants) to contact, interact and ultimately collaborate with European scientists (co-applicants) to strengthen Scotland's knowledge base and international status as a leader in the natural solution of climate-related problems. The programme is modelled on an existing international exchange programme between SAGES and the Geoverbund ABC/J and will be extended to include leading French universities/research institutes and the 26+ European university members of the UArctic network.

All relevant information and requirements for the application (Directed Scheme) can be found on the SERENE application portal page. The Directed Scheme is open to SAGES members and partners from the Geoverbund ABC/J, the 26+ pan-European UArctic members and existing links in France. Co-applicants are required to provide 25% co-financing from the host institution (Geoverbund ABC/J funding share), either in the form of financial resources or in-kind contributions. Please note that the application and all related formalities will be coordinated by SAGES. The deadline for applications is 01.12.2021. Any queries regarding the application and the procedure can therefore only be addressed to SAGES. The required letter of support from the partner institution (Co-applicant match funding support document) can be requested from the ABC/J Coordination Office.
